China and the United States should properly resolve relevant trade issues through dialogue and negotiation, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang on Wednesday.
Geng made the remarks at a regular press briefing in reply to the question whether Chinese side will propose trade talks to the U.S.
"We believe that dialogue is better than confrontation with regard to economic and trade issues. We always advocate that our two sides should properly resolve trade issues through dialogue and negotiation. China and the U.S. have held three rounds of trade talks and achieved some progress. During these talks, China has demonstrated full sincerity and goodwill," said the spokesman.
While regarding the comments of Peter Navarro, the director of the White House National Trade Council who said that "the U.S. is open to trade talks and that if a trade war broke out, China would suffer more losses than the U.S.," Geng said "China won't initiate a trade war, but we are definitely not afraid of one. If someone insists on waging a trade war, then we will firmly safeguard our legitimate rights and interests. We will fight to the finish, which we have said many times before."
