Storyline

Two people have been confirmed dead after an explosion hit a massive rally for the prime minister Saturday in Addis Ababa, capita of Ethiopia.

According to the Ethiopian health ministry, a second person who was in intensive care unit at a hospital in the capital city has died due to his severe injuries. One person had already been killed in Saturday's blast.

It said more than 150 people were injured in the blast.

Hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians were attending a rally held to support the reform program of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, when someone in the crowd reportedly tried to throw a grenade onto the stage.

Efphraim Ayana, a local resident, witnessed the terrible moment.

"I heard a blast from the square and was told to leave immediately. So I came over here. You can see the bloodstains there. A lot of people got injured. There were personal belongings everywhere," said Ayana.

According to the health ministry, about 40 people have been hospitalized with injuries, five of whom in critical conditions.

"One of them required an emergency surgery, because he had a vascular injury to his legs and it was a major vascular injury. So he was in shock and he was operated for that one. And we managed to repair the injury and their bleeding has stopped for now, but he is still in shock and he required more blood. And we have another two patients who will need an emergency surgery," said Ewnetue Binyam, a doctor at a local hospital which has taken in some of the injured people.

Since coming to power in April, Ahmed has moved fast to institute political reforms including freeing thousands of prisoners including several prominent opposition figures.

The political reforms come after almost three years of unrest in Oromia and Amhara - Ethiopia's two most populous regional states - which together make up more than 60 percent of the country's estimated 100 million population.
