Storyline

Life in Yemen's Hodeida City has become hard for residents there, as the government forces have launched operations to retake the city and port since June 13.

Supplies of water and electricity have been disrupted. Hospitals do not have enough doctors and medicines. Worse still, many fear that the flames of war will be burning at the downtown area if street fights break out between the government troops and the rebels.

"If there are conflicts in the city, that will be a catastrophe," said Muhammad Ayyash, first deputy governor of Hodeidah province.

According to plans made by the Yemeni government and the coalition led by Saudi Arabia, the government forces will gain Hodeida's airport, city area and port from south to north. Before the troops head for port for the final victory, they will confront the rebels sooner or later in the city area.

The imminent crossfire on streets already cast shadow on the life of civilians living there. Local hospitals are concerned about innocent civilians who will very likely be injured during the fight. The hospitals are not able to provide effective treatments because of the lack of medicine and manpower.

"If there are massive casualties, especially during festivals or holidays and if the conflict escalates, all civilians and medical staff will be unable to cope with the mass casualty," said Khalid Ahmed, director of a Hodeida's hospital.

Since the outbreak of the war, several civilians have been injured or killed by shells and rockets accidentally. Many families have fled away. Those who are unable to leave can only stay at home.

"For most of us residents, there is nothing inside house. We can only pray to God for shelter. This is life here. We spend the money as soon as we earn them. We can only wait to die at home. No one will give you even 10 rials out of nothing," said a local resident.
