Storyline

The U.S. release of tariff list in the form of accelerated escalation is "absolutely unacceptable," and China will take necessary countermeasures, said the Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) Wednesday.

The ministry made the statement in response to the U.S. latest announcement of planning to impose more tariffs on Chinese products worth around 200 billion U.S. dollars.

"The U.S. release of tariff list in the form of accelerated escalation is absolutely unacceptable," said the ministry in a written speech of its spokesman. "We put up our solemn protest against it. The U.S. action is hurting China, hurting the whole world and also hurting itself. Such an act that is out of rationality is unpopular."

"China is shocked at the U.S. act. In order to safeguard our core national interests and people's fundamental interests, the Chinese government will as always have to take necessary countermeasures," said the MOFCOM spokesman.

"At the same time, we appeal to the international community to make joint efforts, jointly uphold rules of free trade and multilateral trading regimes and jointly oppose trade bullyism," said the spokesman.

China will immediately make additional file to the World Trade Organization against the U.S. unilateralism, the spokesman said.

"Under such circumstances, I think on the one hand it is necessary to conduct related fight against the United States, on the other hand we should join hands with all other trading partners in the world to engage in negotiations with the U.S. We hope the U.S. will not go too far in the wrong direction and we hope it could become a responsible major economy," said Zhang Jianping, Director of the Research Center for Regional Economic Cooperation under the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.
