More than 2,000 Greeks flooded streets of Athens on Wednesday to stage a protest against the U.S. and the ongoing North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit held in Brussels.
"Against the summit of NATO. The American imperialists are having a summit in Brussels," said Antonis, a protester.
The protesters criticized the U.S. and the U.S.-led NATO for intervening in the Middle East issues, urging the U.S. to stop meddling with civil affairs of the Syrian people. What the U.S. and its allies did in the Middle East has left tens of thousands of civilians displaced; and the European countries crammed with refugees, according to the protesters.
"So we are against all intervention in Syrian War. [It's] for the Syrian people to decide what to do alone, not (for) the big bosses," said Antonis.
The protesters first gathered at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, passed the Hellenic Parliament and finally arrived at the U.S. Embassy in Greece.
The 2018 NATO summit began Wednesday in Brussels with verbal fireworks, as recent tensions between the U.S. and its allies were laid bare by U.S. President Donald Trump in a growing row over burden sharing and foreign influence.
