Chinese president Xi Jinping met with Audrey Azoulay, director-general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in Beijing on Monday.
Xi welcomed Azoulay's first visit in China as the UNESCO director-general at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse.
Xi noted that since China entered a new era, the nation has been building stronger cultural confidence by promoting the development of education, science and technology and cultural programs, and in the meantime, China also advocates mutual respect and exchanges among different cultures.
Xi added that China proposed the Belt and Road Initiative with an aim to promote common development and people-to-people exchanges.
Xi stressed that as the world's largest intellectual cooperation organization, UNESCO can play an important role in building a community with a shared future for mankind.
China attaches great importance to UNESCO and firmly supports its key role in promoting global development. China is willing to deepen cooperation with UNESCO to deliver benefits to people all over the world, said Xi.
Audrey Azoulay said UNESCO appreciates China for its support and commitment to multilateralism. She says UNESCO agrees with China on building a community with a shared future for mankind and is willing to participate in Belt and Road cooperation to make contribution to world peace, security and cooperation.
