"We've seen the great growth in Chinese GDP over the period. But I think when we also see the steps China has been taking to change the policy framework to make systems more transparent, to comply with WTO requirements. These are very positive moves and move towards greater IP protection as well. That's significant."

"China is now the heart of a global supplier of goods. Since China's succession to the WTO, we've seen UK-China trade increased significantly by 64 percent since 2010. So in 2017, it was around 60 billion pounds in value. We've also seen an increased investment from China into the UK. And again in 2017, that amounted to around 20 billion pounds. China is playing a much more significant role on the global stage as part of global trade. I think that's to everybody's benefit."

Storyline

What China has achieved in global trade since it joined the world Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001 has been well-acknowledged and benefited all sides concerned, said a British financial official.

Catherine McGuinness, chairwoman of the Policy and Resources Committee of the City of London Corporation, made the remarks when commenting on the White Paper "China and the World Trade Organization", which was released by China's State Council Information Office to give a full account of China's fulfillment of its World Trade Organization (WTO) commitments, to explain China's principles, stances, policies, and propositions regarding the multilateral trading system, and to describe China's vision and actions in advancing higher-level reform and opening-up.

McGuiness said that China, as a WTO member, has prudently fulfilled its obligations, and made great contribution to global trade and intellectual property (IP) protection in the past 17 years.

"We've seen the great growth in Chinese GDP over the period. But I think when we also see the steps China has been taking to change the policy framework to make systems more transparent, to comply with WTO requirements. These are very positive moves and move towards greater IP protection as well. That's significant," she said.

McGuinness also noted that China's foreign trade and foreign investment has continuously increased since it joined the WTO, which have benefited the whole world.

I think that's to everybody's benefit," said McGuinness.

The chairwoman also praised China for its active promotion in its opening up efforts to the outside world.

As for the trade friction with the United States, McGuinness pointed out that the U.S. behavior is damaging to everyone.

"A trade war is a lose-lose situation, and won't benefit anybody. So we hope to see the resolution as soon as possible," said McGuinness.
