Storyline

Heavy downpours continued to lash some parts of Beijing on Tuesday morning, flooding the city and causing dangerous road conditions, including several road washouts and collapses.

Heavy rain slammed Jianguo Road, Chaoyang District, with obvious water logging on streets and dark clouds in the sky, causing vehicles to turn on their lights.

From Sunday to Tuesday, 121 monitoring stations in the city saw precipitation of more than 100 millimeters and 12 monitoring stations received more than 200-millimeter precipitation.

The heavy downpour has caused several road collapses in the city.

At a section of Liuxin Road in Miyun District, road maintenance workers have been busy repairing the section, which was destroyed by downpour-triggered flood.

"What we are doing now is laying a foundation for a temporary road, then we will lay down cement concrete pipes on the foundation. Later on, we will reinforce its edges and the slope. After that, we will build a wall, and we will build a roadbed behind the wall. We hope to restore traffic around this Friday," said Zhang Bo, deputy director of Miyun Branch of Beijing Municipal Commission of Transportation Road Administration Bureau.

As the road is the only way for about 1,000 residents in five villages to the outsides, local authorities set up a disaster relief center, distributing daily necessities to the trapped residents.

The downpour-trigged flood also destroyed the roadbed of a road that links Beijing and Jiagedaqi in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.

The roadbed was washed out on Monday morning by flood, which was spelled out from a swollen river caused by the heavy rain.

Beijing's road administration authorities reacted immediately, sending workers and machines for repair.

"As we are filling the roadbed, a road roller has been used for grinding. Yesterday, we just filled the roadbed, and today we grind it. We hope to reopen the road before the noon, under the premise of safety," said Liu Guofu, a chief of Road Maintenance Section of Huairou Branch of Beijing Municipal Commission of Transportation Road Administration Bureau.

The heavy rain will last through Wednesday, according to the meteorological authorities of Beijing, with rainfall reaching 40 millimeters to 60 millimeters in most areas and 150 millimeters at some parts. The hourly rainfall is expected to hit 80 millimeters.
