Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping's forthcoming visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the first by a Chinese head of state in 29 years, will be of political, historic and strategic significance to bilateral relations, said Chinese Ambassador to the Gulf country Ni Jian on July 14.

Ni made the statement in an exclusive interview with the China Central Television (CCTV) five days before Xi is to pay a state visit to the UAE at the invitation of UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan from Thursday to Saturday.

The UAE attaches great importance to Xi's visit and has made full preparations for it, according to Ni.

"Both of us [China and the UAE] have an assessment on bilateral relations which says that the UAE is the country in the Middle East region with which China maintains the deepest level of cooperation in largest number of sectors with the most fruitful outcomes. Against the backdrop of the current bilateral relations, the UAE government is attaching great importance to Xi's forthcoming visit," Ni said.

"Our colleagues and friends from the UAE told us that they will arrange a reception with unprecedentedly high standards and courtesy, which is expected to inject new impetus into the development of the China-UAE ties," the ambassador said.

The two countries have been deepening trade and economic cooperation, said Ni, adding that they are witnessing progress in the cultural, tourist and educational fields.

In 2017, the bilateral trade stood at 41 billion U.S. dollars, a 1.06 percent increase from the previous year. At the end of 2015, China's foreign direct investment in the UAE reached 4.6 billion U.S. dollars. In 2016, the UAE invested over 2.1 billion dollars in China, topping the list among Arab countries.

The UAE is China's second largest trade partner and the largest export market for Chinese goods among Arab countries, while China has been the largest trade partner of the UAE for many consecutive years.

In addition, the UAE is implementing a plan for opening 100 schools teaching the Chinese language, fully demonstrating its desire to deepen cultural cooperation between the two countries, according to the ambassador.

Furthermore, there are overlapping visions for the Belt and Road Initiative and the UAE development strategies.

"President Xi came up with the Belt and Road Initiative, and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan proposed the vision of 'Restore the Silk Road'. President Xi also put forward the Chinese Dream, and Crown Prince Mohamed brought up the UAE Dream embodying an idea of promoting his country to be one of the best nations in the world. The overlapping visions made by leaders of the two countries can not only advance the bilateral ties of the two countries, but also inject strong momentums into them. They are expected to be of great significance to maintaining the peace and security in the Middle East and promoting the development of the whole world and human beings," Ni said.

The visit will further consolidate mutual political and strategic trust between the two countries and enhance bilateral cooperation, leading to a future-oriented strategic partnership that involves the region and benefits the world, Ni said.

"We believe and expect that the visit will achieve complete success and write a new chapter for the China-UAE relations. It will set a milestone," Ni said.

In April 2015, the UAE joined the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) as a founding member.

The UAE and China signed a series of agreements including a currency swap deal during the visit by Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi Emirate, to Beijing in December 2015.

The UAE was also included in the Chinese Yuan Qualified Foreign Institutional Investors scheme.

In 2017, the number of Chinese tourist visits to the UAE surged to over 1 million, and in January this year, the UAE became the 11th country to have mutual visa-exemptions with China for ordinary passport holders, according to Ni.
