Storyline

Relief work has been in full swing in Tonghai County of southwest China's Yunnan Province after two magnitude-5.0 earthquakes hit the area on Monday and Tuesday.

In the urban area of Tonghai, local authorities set up a makeshift tent camp at the county's stadium to accommodate those people evacuated from places vulnerable to danger.

In the meantime, volunteers were organized to send food and drinking water to people in the evacuation center.

In addition to the urban area of Tonghai, 50 tents were also put up along the streets of Sijie Town in the county -- one of the most severely affected areas -- to shelter over 460 residents whose houses were damaged or flattened in the seismic disasters. Police officers have been patrolling the camp to ensure safety.

In Sijie's Zhewan Village, many houses collapsed in the earthquakes, a number of street lights were also knocked over, blocking the roads in the village. However, excavators still managed to drive into the village to remove the rubbles.

"At around 03:50 this morning, an aftershock hit the village and then several tremors followed. The relevant department recorded six aftershocks. Because this was the second earthquake, the destruction was so strong that many houses collapsed and then knocked over the street lights," said Zhang Shuangquan, a village leader, who conducted the relief work in Zhewan.

Besides tents and beddings for the quake-displaced people, Zhewan's village committee also opened a temporary canteen to provide free food for them.

"It was the first time that we experienced an earthquake. Though we were scared and panicked, we still felt a kind of warmth from the government as they sent us tents, water and food," said Yang Li, a villager in Zhewan.

In Sizhai Village of Sijie, an emergency force checked the quake-hit spots and cordoned off the areas that have still been deemed dangerous. For the next step they will demolish the irreparable buildings in the village.

Medical workers are engaging in intense work to treat those injured in the earthquakes. To prevent an epidemic outbreak, medics were seen spraying disinfectants around the camp.

"The next priority is that we have to make sure that life in the disaster-hit areas is in order. We should keep people's life normal there in all aspects. Second, we should put more strength on monitoring the situation of the area and make instant records and studies on the following seismic situation scientifically. Third, we should make sure secondary disasters will not take place there," said Yin Zhaomin, the vice director of the China Earthquake Administration.

As of noon Tuesday, the earthquakes have affected nearly 70,000 people in places like Huaning County and Jiangchuan District as well as Tonghai, leaving 24 injured with no fatalities. Local authorities have evacuated and relocated 33,148 people and an estimated 8,000 houses have been damaged in the wake of this natural disaster.
