Storyline

The Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) sports complex, which will serve as the main venue for the 2018 Asian Games, has been fully prepared for the event with a new face after about two years of renovation.

Located in south Jakarta, the sports complex consists of a variety of sports arenas or facilities including a main stadium with a seating capacity for 88,000 spectators, an athletic stadium, several football pitches, an aquatics stadium, numbers of tennis courts, a hockey rink, baseball and archery fields, and several indoor gymnasiums.

Named after Indonesia's first president Sukarno, the complex was built in 1960 for the 1962 Asian Games and started a major renovation in 2016 for the 2018 Asian Games at a cost of about 770 billion Indonesian rupiah (about 55 million U.S. dollars).

The GBK main stadium was originally built for football matches with a seating capacity for about 100,000 spectators, but in 2007 it was revamped with seating capacity reducing to 88,000 for the Asian Cup of the year, as standardized seats were installed to replace the old benches which did not provide spectators with individual seats.

After the renovation, the main stadium will look brighter in night after the addition of light emitting diode (LED) lights of 3,500 lux from the previous 1,200 lux. In addition, 1,293 solar panels have been installed to supply clean energy. Besides the illumination system, the stadium's stereo system has also been upgraded. Other facilities such as elevators and wheelchair ramps have been added too.

The sports complex has hosted a number of international sports events including the Southeast Asian Games, the 2007 Asian Cup, Thomas Cup and Uber Cup badminton competitions. And the 2008 Beijing Olympic torch relay was also held there.

At present, the torch relay for the 2018 Asian Games is underway in Indonesia and is expected to arrive in Jakarta before August 18. The holy flames will be ignited at the opening ceremony at the GBK main stadium on Aug 18.

The 2018 Asian Games are scheduled to be held from Aug 18 to Sept 2.
