"The economic relations between our two countries are not a zero-sum game. It has been mutually beneficial and should continue to be mutually beneficial. With this in mind, I'm quite certain that we will be able to solve issues between us because long-term common interest is just that so clear, there is no alternative to that. We are the two largest economies in the world, and we are both permanent members of the UN Security Council. We have great responsibility not only to our own countries but also to the world. And we do have increasing mutual needs and common interests. So, all these determine that cooperation is the only option, the only right choice we should make."

Storyline

Cooperation is the only option and choice for the development of economic relations between China and the United States, said Cui Tiankai, Chinese Ambassador to the U.S., in Frankfort, Kentucky on Monday.

Addressing at a welcome banquet hosted by Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin, Cui said China-U.S. economic relations are not a zero-sum game but have been, and will always be mutually beneficial.

"With this in mind, I'm quite certain that we will be able to solve issues between us because long-term common interest is just that so clear, there is no alternative to that. We are the two largest economies in the world, and we are both permanent members of the UN Security Council. We have great responsibility not only to our own countries but also to the world. And we do have increasing mutual needs and common interests. So, all these determine that cooperation is the only option, the only right choice we should make," said Cui.

This is Cui's first visit to Kentucky, which came on the heels of Washington's decision to go ahead with 25 percent tariffs on 16 billion U.S. dollars worth Chinese goods last Wednesday.

Cui said there is no way that China would seek development and prosperity by outshining others. He also said China needs to cooperate with other countries, especially with the United States.

The Chinese ambassador said good relations between the U.S. and China will not only require effort on the state level, but also from the citizens of both countries as well.

"We have our confidence about the future of the US-China relations, because we have confidence in the friendship and cooperation between our people. We have confidence in this kind of sub-national and local level cooperation between our states, provinces, cities and towns. And I think Kentucky is playing a leading role in this regard. I very much appreciate that and very much encourage you to do more. And we in the embassy would very much like to support you,” said Cui.

Looking into the future, Cui said the two countries must focus on the bigger picture rather than indulge in the obsession of deficits and surpluses.

"We must work together and make sure that better predictability and sustainability in global economic growth, rather than create more barriers and obstacles to undermine the prospect for global prosperity. So I think our two great nations have to do all these things together, because none of us can really solve all these things all by self. I think this is what determines the long-term direction of our relationship, that's why I have full confidence in this," Cui noted.

Governor Bevin described the ongoing trade disputes with China as part of larger negotiations that will eventually "settle down."

He said he would like to see 200 Chinese companies operating in Kentucky over the next two decades.

In addition, Bevin is scheduled to attend the China International Import Expo in Shanghai in November. He said he's going due to China's "massive appetite in products made in the United States."
