Storyline

The Indonesian city of Palembang is ready to cohost the upcoming Asian Games, with renovated facilities and tightened security.

The city is well prepared for the upcoming event, having already renovated Jakabaring Stadium.

Two new residential buildings have also been constructed, bringing the total number of dormitory buildings to 10, which will house 3,100 athletes and some delegates.

Moreover, the city's very first light-rail transit line, specially designed for this year's Asian Games, has been put into operation.

The 23-kilometer line connects the local airport and the Jakabaring Sport Complex, and is free for athletes.

Local police have set up 46 checkpoints and deployed more than 3,000 officers across Palembang to ensure the security of the upcoming games.

"We have sent police forces to four kinds of important locations in the city, including local tourist attractions, airports, hotels and major government departments," said patrol unit sub-director Syarnubi Idris.

Major tourist destinations in the city were also renovated to welcome athletes and tourists.

"By hosting the Asian Games in Palembang, we can attract tourists from other countries to the city. They will know about our culture, especially local specialties, including the most famous songket," said local resident Dedy.

Palembang is the capital of South Sumatra province. With a long history and many well-known tourist attractions, the city received about two million domestic and international tourists last year.

The 18th Asian Games will be jointly hosted by Palembang and Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, from Aug. 18 to Sept. 2.

Around 11,300 athletes from 45 Asian countries and regions will compete in 40 sports and 67 disciplines.
