Storyline

China's panda population has been increasing as the country has continuously improved their habitats.

The number of wild pandas in China has increased from 1,114 in the 1970s to 1,864 now, according to data released by the State Forestry and Grassland Administration.

A total of 10 giant panda cubs have been born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, in southwest China's Sichuan Province, this year, including four pairs of twins.

One of the pairs of twins was a pigeon pair, meaning one girl and one boy. The twin rate for giant pandas has now reached 70 percent.

All 10 newborn pandas are healthy, even little Run Jiu, who recently recovered after receiving nine stitches for a cut on her head. Run Jiu is eating normally again and has regained the weight she lost during her recovery.

"At present, Run Jiu's weight has returned to normal. Even though it was injured, the wound has healed very well," said Zhang Hao, a breeder at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Giant panda Ya Yun give birth to the pigeon pair on June 5. Since then, newborn cubs have arrived every month. Breeders at the center are busy helping the mothers care for their young ones.

"In general, most of the giant panda mothers can hold their cubs in their arms. But there are a few mothers who don’t take care of their cubs. Then our breeders should take the cubs out in a timely manner and put them in the incubator and feed them," said Liu Yuliang, a researcher at the breeding base.

The number of giant panda nature reserves has increased to 67, forming a giant panda habitat protection network system; a total of 53.8 percent of the giant pandas' habitat and 66.8 percent of the wild giant panda population are included in the effective protection of the nature reserve, according to the State Forestry and Grassland Administration.

The endangered condition of giant pandas in the wild has been further alleviated, according to the administration.
