Thirty crew members of two fishing vessels were rescued from waves up to three meters high in the East China Sea on Thursday before the Friday landing of Typhoon Rumbia.
The two vessels, one stranded and the other with engine failure, were caught in strong winds and high waves brought by approaching Typhoon Rumbia Thursday morning.
Four helicopters from the Chinese Ministry of Transport rescued them from the vessels and transferred them to safe locations.
Typhoon Rumbia, the 18th this year, made landfall at around 04:05 Friday in Pudong New Area, Shanghai, bringing torrential rains and packing strong winds of up to 23 meters per second, or 82.8 km per hour, at its eye, according to the National Meteorological Center (NMC).
China's national weather observatory on Friday morning issued a blue alert for typhoon Rumbia. China has a four-tier, color-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe, followed by orange, yellow, and blue.
By Friday morning, altogether 2,525 vessels had returned to port and 3,209 crew members had gone ashore. And 53,000 people had been evacuated in Shanghai.
Typhoon Rumbia, the third of the typhoons that had made landfall in Shanghai this month, will bring strong winds and heavy rains to the city from Friday to Saturday, according to the municipal flood control and drought relief headquarters.
