Syrian artists have turned a formerly rebel-run underground tunnel into a sculpture gallery in the Jobar neighborhood in Eastern Ghouta after the defeat of local rebels in April.
It took 25 days for the 18 artists to complete the nine-meter-long sculpture wall which mainly depicts scenes of war and peace, such as a Syrian soldier holding a gun under the Syrian national flag, or a child releasing a white pigeon that symbolizes peace.
The sculptures also depict the history and present conditions of Syria, such as the Damascus Sword monument in the Umayyad Square which is considered the symbol of Syria.
The idea of the sculpture wall came from a fighter of the Syrian Arab Army who has an artistic background. He once served in the Eastern Ghouta and carved several sculptures on walls at his leisure. After the recovery of the area, he invited some artists to start the sculpture project to bring hope and light into those tunnels which were used by the rebels for ambush and weapon transportation.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad visited the tunnel with his wife on Thursday. He said the artists' work has turned the tunnels of destruction, darkness and death into a symbol of development, hope and life.
