Storyline

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Sunday expressed his good will of strengthening relations with China as he continues his five-day visit to the country.

Mahathir is making his first visit to China since returning to office following May's general election. The 93-year-old made seven previous visits to China when he served as prime minister from 1981 to 2003.

In an interview with China Central Television (CCTV) in Beijing, Mahathir noted that China has made tremendous progress since his last visit as prime minister 17 years ago.

"The China I'm seeing now is not quite the same China that I've seen before. It has now become a very powerful, very rich nation with a lot of modern technological capabilities. So the chances for Malaysia gaining from a good relationship with China are much better now than before. China will play a big role in the economy of east Asia, and even the world, and this can only be beneficial for a trading nation like Malaysia," said Mahathir.

Relations with China and Malaysia have been steadily developing since diplomatic ties were established 44 years ago, with the two nations forming a comprehensive strategic partnership back in 2013. Mahathir says his government will continue to deepen its relations with China, and will work on any differences in a constructive manner.

"The relationship between China and Malaysia is very important for Malaysia. It is the way for the country to grow -- to have good relations with China, and to have trading relations with China. I think the relationship will be strengthened. And if there are problems, I think we can talk and discuss with China. If you have good relation, then we can resolve. But we don't want to be confrontational with China because confrontation will not solve anything," said the prime minister.

With China being Malaysia's biggest trading partner for nine years in a row, Mahathir mentioned during his current trip that Malaysia will seek to explore cooperation across even more fields. The prime minister expressed a particular interest in China's technological sector and paid a visit to the headquarters of Chinese internet giant Alibaba and automaker Geely in east China's Hangzhou City during the first stop of his China tour.

"I think China will lead the world in many areas, including in new technologies and new applications. Chinese people are very inventive, very innovative. We know them because in Malaysia we have a lot of Chinese people and they have all done very well. So I believe that with your 1.4 billion people, very hard working, very innovative, China can only continue to prosper and develop," said Mahathir.
