A Chinese ice-class cargo ship on Saturday night sailed out of the Arctic Circle en-route to Rouen, France, where it is expected to arrive on Wednesday before heading to the Netherlands and Sweden.
Tian En, a multifunctional ship developed by COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers Co., is delivering 37,000 cubic meters of wind power equipment to European countries. It will then be loaded with imported goods and sail back to China along the Arctic's Northeast Passage.
Tian En departed Lianyungang, east China's Jiangsu Province, on August 4, before crossing the Bering Strait en-route to European ports.
The route along the Arctic's Northeast Passage will shorten travel time by 12 days and save 300 tons of fuel oil compared with the traditional route, according to COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers Co.
