Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday called on countries in Northeast Asia to strengthen cooperation in Russia's Far East and Northeast Asia for a better future of the region.
Xi made the statement in addressing the plenary session of the fourth Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok of Russia's Far East.
He said countries in the region should enhance mutual trust and strive to maintain regional peace and stability.
Noting that the total population in the six countries in Northeast Asia accounts for 23 percent of the global population and their GDPs account for 19 percent of the global total, Xi said a harmonious, mutual trusting, consolidated and stable Northeast Asia is in the interest of all countries and in anticipation of the international community.
"It is also of great significance to maintaining multilateralism, and promoting development of the international order toward greater justice and equitableness," said Xi.
Xi called for efforts to deepen cooperation to achieve win-win results for the participating countries.
Xi said countries should actively coordinate their national development strategies.
"Under the consensus reached between President Putin and me, China and Russia are now working on the coordination of the Belt and Road construction and the Eurasia Economic Union, with the achievement of major early results. China is willing to coordinate its development strategies with all parties on this basis, and strengthen policy communication and coordination to make concerted efforts and set the direction for cooperation," said Xi.
The Chinese president said countries should give priority to promoting the level of interconnectivity and mutual access of cross-border infrastructure, trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, promote market, capital and technology liquidity among countries, optimize resources distribution and the industrial structure, jointly build an open regional economy and establish a Northeast Asian economic sphere.
Xi also called for vigorous promotion of efforts to boost small-scale multilateral cooperation and sub-regional cooperation, learn from one another, consolidate traditional friendship among the peoples of the countries in the region, and realize comprehensive coordinated development on a long-term basis.
The session of the forum began with a keynote speech by Russian President Vladimir Putin. He stressed that the development of the Far East region is a long-term policy for Russia and the region's economic growth will gain its momentum in the coming years.
The forum, under the theme of "The Russian Far East: Expanding the Range of Possibilities," is being held in Vladivostok on September 11-13.
Proposed by Russian President Putin in 2015, the EEF represents Russia's efforts to push forward cooperation in the Far East.
