Storyline

China on Tuesday commemorated the 87th anniversary of the "September 18 Incident" that marked Japan's full-scale invasion of China and the beginning of the 14 years of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and opened up the prelude to the World Anti-Fascist War.

The bell rang and siren went off on Tuesday morning at the September 18 Incident History Museum in Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province.

Representatives from all walks of life collectively rang the bell 14 times, representing the 14 years of the fight by the Chinese people against Japanese invaders. Anti-air raid sirens went off at 09:18 for three minutes across the city.

It is the 24th year since the bell-tolling ceremony was first launched.

On Sept 18, 1931, Japanese troops exploded a railway controlled by Japan near Shenyang, but they passed the blame onto Chinese troops, accusing them of sabotaging the railway. They then used it as a pretext for launching a full-scale invasion. They bombarded Chinese troops' barracks near Shenyang on the same day, starting a 14-year war of invasion.
