Storyline

Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano, one of the most active in the world, started to erupt again since Sunday, leaving the surrounding area on level-two yellow alert.

The volcano erupted 64 times from Sunday to Monday. During most of the eruptions, it ejected a great deal of water vapor and volcanic gas, with smog, sulfur steam and volcanic ash included.

At Monday noon, the volcano experienced a strong eruption by shooting a 1,200 meter-high ash column into the sky, and the loud noise can even be heard more than 10 kilometers away.

The life of the residents living in the area has not been affected significantly, but they need to make preparation in response to a possible more powerful eruption.

A senior local resident said they have to store materials and food at home, as it's dangerous to drive cars outside if gravels are shot out.

"the volcano has kept erupting in recent days. It's a bit quiet now, but eruption is continuing... I have seen magma flowing from the crater for some times at night, but it's invisible if cloud is too thick," said another resident.

Located about 70 kilometers southwest of Mexico City, the Popocatepetl volcano is the second highest peak of the country with a height of 5,426 meters.

The Popocatepetl volcano last had a major eruption in December 2000, when masses of lava flowed for weeks and led to the evacuation of some 40,000 people.
