"Here I want to reiterate that in response to the action taken by the U.S. side, China has to take necessary countermeasures to defend its own legitimate rights and interests, and safeguard the global order of free trade. Just like what you mentioned, the U.S. action has brought new uncertainties to the trade negotiations between the two sides. Previously we had already expressed our stance on China-U.S. trade issue many times, and I think it has already been clear-cut for everybody."

The U.S. decision of imposing 10 percent additional tariffs on 200 billion U.S. dollars' worth of Chinese goods has brought new uncertainties to the trade negotiations between the two sides, said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman on Tuesday.
The new tariffs slapped on Chinese goods by U.S. President Donald Trump will take effect from Sept 24. Earlier on Tuesday China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOC) made remarks on the new tariffs, announcing that China will be forced to take countermeasures in response.
Reiterating China’s decision at a news briefing in Beijing, Geng Shuang, the spokesman, said that the U.S. action has brought new uncertainties to a negotiated settlement to its trade frictions with China.

The new tariffs were announced on Monday ahead of a new round of trade negotiations planned by the two countries.
On Sept 13 MOC spokesperson Gao Feng confirmed that China received an invitation from the U.S. to hold trade negotiations.
Gao also said the two countries were in discussion about the details.
