Storyline

Economic monitoring and early warning mechanism has played a positive role in helping the foreign trade enterprises in east China's Zhejiang Province to cope with trade tensions, including that with the United States.

Zhejiang launched the mechanism ten years ago, and under the mechanism the Zhejiang Foreign Trade Public Service Platform and 106 early warning points have been set up in the province, benefiting nearly 10,000 local enterprises.

Companies can now easily understand the international trade situation, latest regulations and even countermeasures to deal with trade disputes thanks to the mechanism which could also provide free legal consultancy service for companies in need.

Along with the escalation of trade tensions with the U.S., many companies in Zhejiang have been affected.

Among the list of 200 billion U.S. dollars worth of Chinese goods targeted for latest round of additional U.S. tariffs, those from the Zhejiang Native Produce and Animal By-Products I/E Group Co., Ltd, are worth about 88 million U.S. dollars, which is 14.7 percent of the company's annual export value.

"It provides us some suggestions and countermeasures about how to work together with our American customers to deal with the problem," said Shi Wenlei, general manager of the company.

The trade tensions between China and the U.S. have created more difficulties for the bilateral trade, but some think this may be a good chance for Chinese companies to improve themselves.

"If Chinese companies do not respond actively, they will suffer more. They have to cope with the escalated trade tensions actively. Chinese companies will grow and get tested by going through trials and hardships. So this is also an opportunity for them from another perspective," said Han Hongxiang, director with the trade remedy and investigation bureau under the Department of Commerce of Zhejiang Province.
