Storyline

Non-governmental organizations in Paris are concerned about the refugee crisis as camps are overflowing onto the streets.

When the migrant camps in Calais in northern France closed last year, many refugees moved to the big cities, like Paris.

"Since a couple of years ago, there are hundreds of persons who are there and they stay on the streets. That's unacceptable," said Pierre Henry, general director with the NGO France Terre d'Asile.

Over recent weeks, the situation in Paris has deteriorated, but there has been little response from the government.

"The migration crisis is behind us. During this crisis, Germany received 1.5 million refugees, and nobody had to stay on the streets. And we, with 100,000 people, well, there are camps with 500 people in Nantes, there are people in east Paris and in a number of cities, the situation is not very good," said Henry.

Some NGOs have stopped helping the migrants because of growing tensions between the different groups. The refugees now have to rely on volunteers for food and water.

According to refugees, they are scared of being recognized back in their home country, so they do not want to appear on camera.

Meretab comes from Eritrea and has been in France only ten days.

"My friends are here, from Eritrea, Ethiopia and Sudan. France is good to us," he said.

France will probably not grant him asylum, so he will likely have to leave.

"I have no work. In Ethiopia, I was a floor and wall tiler. I don't speak French," he added.

The French government increased the number of houses for asylum seekers last year, but there are still many migrants sleeping on the streets, or in makeshift camps.

As long as there is no common European asylum policy, situations like these will continue to exist.
