Storyline

Rosmah Mansor, wife of former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, was charged on Thursday with money laundering and tax evasions as the country continues its probe into state investment firm 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

Rosmah faces a total of 17 counts of charges under Malaysia's anti-money laundering law, including money laundering by engaging directly in transaction that involves proceeds of unlawful activities, totaling about 7.1 million ringgit (1.7 million U.S. dollars).

She was also charged for failing to declare income tax.

"This charge, so much is said about 1MDB and nothing is stated in those charges about 1MDB," said K. Kumaraendran, lawyer for Rosmah Mansor.

"We've got 17 charges, and Datin Seri Rosmah, this is a good opportunity for Datin Seri Rosmah to clear her name," said Geethan Ram Vincent, lawyer for Rosmah Mansor.

The 66-year old Rosmah, who was presented at a Kuala Lumpur court, confidently pleaded not guilty to each charge as it was read out to her.

The money laundering charges carry a penalty of up to 15 years in jail and a fine.

Former PM Najib Razak arrived at the same courthouse shortly after his wife for a pre-trial appearance. He faces 32 charges of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering in connection with hundreds of millions of dollars prosecutors contend was siphoned off from state investment firm 1MDB.

"We've got a very strong defense and I'm also suspicious of the fact that these charges that have been placed against my client has been placed in a hurried fashion because I can see evidence of the investigation not being completed," said Shafee Abdullah, lawyer for Najib Razak.

Investigations derailed when Najib was prime minister have progressed swiftly since Najib's party was unexpectedly defeated in May's election.

Police say raids on properties linked to Najib and Rosmah turned up hundreds of designer handbags as well as suitcases stuffed with cash and jewelry, altogether valued at more than a quarter billion dollars.

Rosmah was arrested on Wednesday before being brought before the court. She was released on half a million dollars bail, while Najib has also paid more than a million dollars in bail to maintain his freedom while he waits to go on trial starting early next year.

Both Rosmah and her husband Najib are barred from leaving the country along with other individuals connected to the former administration.
