A Ministry of Commerce spokesman said Thursday that China's economic development benefits from its own endeavors and continued efforts to reform and open up.

The spokesman, Gao Feng, made the remarks at a news briefing in Beijing, refuting recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who attributed China's development achievements to the U.S..

"Since 1987, when our country has an official record of foreign capital, China has cumulatively used 2,002.6 billion U.S. dollars of foreign capital, 81.3 billion dollars of which come from the U.S., which accounts for 4.06 percent of the total. We would not deny U.S. capital's role in facilitating our country's development, but China's development fundamentally results from our own endeavors and continued efforts to reform and open up," Gao said.
