Nearly 3,100 people had evacuated their homes in Lijiang City, southwest China's Yunnan Province on Sunday before a flood peak from the leakage of a landslide-caused barrier lake on the upper reaches of the Jinsha River passed their hometown.
On Sunday morning, the Lijiang City, located at the lower reaches of the Jinsha River, received the flood peak from the barrier lake that was formed after a landslide struck a section of the Jinsha River in the border area of Sichuan Province and Tibet Autonomous Region in southwest China, on Oct 12.
According to the Shigu hydrological station in Yulong county, Lijiang, both the flow rate and water level increased significantly on Sunday.
"The water level continues rising. By 19:10 Sunday, the flow has increased to as high as 4,150 cubic meters per second, with the water level rising to 1823.33 meters. In fact, the water level increased by more than three meters within seven to eight hours," said Li Jimu, head of the Lijiang Dam Water Resources Distribution Center of the Lijiang Municipal Water Resources Bureau.
But thanks to early warning, all residents have been relocated to safe places by 15:30 Sunday.
In one of temporary settlements in Judian Village, more than 200 affected residents were seen enjoying meals.
"Our villagers have been here since 09:00. Young people have been deployed to patrol while the elderly staying here, " said a resident.
The water level of the barrier lake returned to normal late on Sunday, with water level from upper to lower reaches of the river remaining steady, according to media reports.
