"We are part of global community. And we should share global concerns. The sustainable development goals, agreed upon by world leaders in 2015, have brought all the countries together in a joint effort. The goals highlight the fact that every country has an area of improvement and need to take action. The consensus on these goals are particularly important at the time when the principle of multilateral order and cooperations are being questioned. We would never achieve the set of goals without global cooperation."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Ine Eriksen Soreide, Norwegian Foreign Minister:
"Today the international rules-based order is under pressure. Country side value or international architectures such as Norway and China should mobilize to defend norms of institutions that we perhaps have taken too much for granted. This network of agreement and institutions require our support if it is to continue to protect us and make our societies more prosperous. We need to build a world, where people's potential, creativity, and hopes are realized through cooperation, trade and exchange of knowledge. And defending this rule-based order is also essential to protect welfare and social security of our citizens."

Storyline

King of Norway Harald V called on every country to make joint efforts to realize the shared goals of sustainable development at a symposium in Beijing on Monday.

The king made the call in his speech at the 2018 Annual Sino-Norwegian Research Symposium -- "Social Welfare in National and International Dimensions".

We would never achieve the set of goals without global cooperation," said the king.

The king said, 10 years after his previous visit, he is this time really touched by China's fruits in implementing "Reform and Opening-up", saying China's practices will play a key role in realizing sustainable development.

He spoke highly of China's achievements in poverty alleviation, hoping China and Norway can launch more cooperation in sustainable development.

At the symposium, Norwegian Foreign Minister, Ine Eriksen Soreide, also gave a speech, noting that social security and social welfare rely on international cooperation.

And defending this rule-based order is also essential to protect welfare and social security of our citizens," said Soreide.

The foreign minister added that China and Norway should learn from each other to realize sustainable development and work together.

She also said the king will exchange with China in terms of social welfare system, climate change and ocean protection, in a bid to further promote sustainable development.
