China's gross domestic product (GDP) expanded 6.7 percent year on year in the first three quarters of 2018, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed Friday.

The pace was in line with market expectations and higher than the government's target of around 6.5 percent.

"The national economy has on the whole maintained stability while making steady progress in the first three quarters," NBS spokesman Mao Shengyong said at a press conference.

Economic structure has been optimized, with new growth drivers fostered to replace old ones over the period, according to Mao. Economic quality has been steadily improved and solid progress has been made in high quality development in the past nine months, he added.

"According to preliminary statistics, China's GDP reached 65.09 trillion yuan in the first three quarters, a year-on-year increase of 6.7 percent at comparable prices," said Mao.

In the third quarter, the growth rate was 6.5 percent as compared to 6.7 percent in the second quarter, according to Mao.

The service sector gained 7.7 percent year on year in the three quarters, picking up from the 7.6-percent increase in the first two.

It also outpaced the 3.4 percent mark in the primary industry and 5.8 percent mark in the secondary industry.
