"Our earlier investigation showed that the soybeans from Anhui and other Yellow River-Huaihe River-Haihe River main grain-producing areas came into the market sporadically, and the prices are a bit lower compared with last year's. In some areas, due to the impact of disasters including drought and typhoon, the quality of soybeans is not as good as last year's. Later, with the coming of the peak purchase and sales season, domestic soybean price is expected to remain stable considering the consumer demands and the cost of planting, and the tendency of high price for high quality product will be more obvious."

Storyline

Supported by favorable government policies and crop rotation mechanism, the soybean planting acreage has increased and China is set for a good harvest of soybeans this year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China said on Friday.

According to Tang Ke, director of the Department of Market and Economic Information of the ministry, the planting acreage of soybeans and peanuts in China increased about 666,666.7 hectares, which has alleviated China's dependence on imports of these products to some extent, and improved the level of self-sufficiency of edible vegetable oil.

Later, with the coming of the peak purchase and sales season, domestic soybean price is expected to remain stable considering the consumer demands and the cost of planting, and the tendency of high price for high quality product will be more obvious," said Tang.

Tang continued to say that from January to August, China imported about 62 million tons of soybeans, down by 2.1 percent year on year. China's soybean imports from Brazil accounted for nearly 70 percent of its overall purchases overseas.

"Generally speaking, right now soybean supply in the Chinese market is ample, and big fluctuations in soybean prices are unlikely to occur," said Tang.

Data from the ministry also show that in the third quarter, China had ample supply of agricultural products and its agricultural market has been stable.

In the third quarter, vegetable prices show a seasonal increase, in a trend similar to that of previous years. In September, the average price of 28 kinds of vegetables under monitoring was 4.32 yuan (about 0.62 U.S. dollars) per kilogram, up by 22 percent year on year.

"Because of the adverse weather this year including wide range of high temperature, typhoon and heavy precipitation, the degrees of increase in vegetable prices are relatively high compared with ordinary years," said Tang.

In terms of grain prices, the purchasing prices of both wheat and early indica rice were low at the beginning, but picked up later. The corn price fluctuated slightly, but the market supply is ample.

"In September, the monthly average wholesale price of corn in producing areas was 0.89 yuan per jin (0.5 kilograms), up 5.9 percent year on year. As deep corn processing has an increasing demand on high quality corn, the price of new corn is generally higher than that of last year," said Tang.
