Storyline

A Syria opposition delegation are heading for Russia for negotiations on Syrian issues, according to Syria Negotiation Commission of Opposition and Revolutionary Forces on Thursday.

Some Syrian opposition groups are holding a meeting in Riyadh, capital of Saudi Arabia, to discuss current situation in Syria. The meeting started on Tuesday, with the date of its conclusion unknown.

At a press conference on Thursday, Nasr al-Hariri, president of the commission appreciated the decision to set up a demilitarized zone in Syria's Idlib province under the Sochi agreement, and said he hoped the deal could become a new beginning of political settlement to Syrian crisis.

He said that they will send a delegation to Moscow, Russia's capital city on Oct. 26 to discuss with Russia how to further promote the resolution to Syrian issue.

"So far, we have a specific and comprehensive plan. It touches upon many core issues of situation in Syria, including how to ensure that Idlib becomes a real demilitarized zone, how to really promote political settlement of Syrian crisis, and achieve political transition of Syria, as well as other issues, such as political prisoners and refugees," said Hariri.

Saudi Arabia and Turkey had reached consensus on providing support to oppositions in north Syria, however, some analysts believe the two countries will fall apart on the Syria issue after the disappearance of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Hariri said both Saudi Arabia and Turkey play important roles in the process of promoting a settlement of the Syria issue, and Syrian crisis needs joint efforts from the international community.

He said he hopes that the interests of Syrian people won't become chips for parties to political bargain and meet their demands.
