Storyline

Embodying the wisdoms of "one country, two systems" principle, the construction and opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HKZM Bridge) will aslo promote the development of the Greater Bay Area, some Chinese officials said on Sunday.

The bridge, which Chinese President Xi Jinping declared open on Tuesday, is a major achievement jointly made by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao under the "one country, two systems" principle, which will bring tremendous benefits to Hong Kong, said Wang Zhimin, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

"The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is the first mega transport infrastructure jointly built by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao under the 'one country, two systems' principle. It's hailed as a miracle in the contemporary world. It will definitely enhance the economic integration of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, expand new space for the better and faster growth of Hong Kong and inject new driving energy of growth for Hong Kong," he said.

The extensive experience accumulated in the construction will provide reference for the building of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, according to Wang.

"During the process of bridge construction, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao have conducted joint negotiations and close cooperation in decision-making and problem-solving. A lot of experience have been accumulated, which will contribute to building the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, establishing regulations and rules and exploring innovative mechanisms," he said.

Praising the new bridge as a great economic and livelihood project, Wang said Hong Kong residents are expected to enjoy more opportunities in the Greater Bay Area - a new one-hour living circle.

"The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is hailed as a super 'economic and livelihood project' because it will greatly cut travel time between the three areas, which will facilitate flows not only in goods, but also in people, information and capital. The conveniences and benefits will allow Hong Kong and Macao residents to enjoy a greater sense of happiness and gain in the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area," said Wang.

His ideas were echoed by Yao Jian, deputy director of the Liaison Office of Central People's Government in Macao Special Administrative Region, who said the construction and opening of the new bridge will help transform Macao into a world center of tourism and leisure and a service platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.

The bridge will have profound impact on the life of Macao's residents, Yao said.

"More and more young people from Macao have come to the Bay Area to live and start their businesses. The prospect is more promising as the opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the building of the Bay Area. Macao residents will enjoy more benefits because more travel options are available for them. They can come to the Bay Area to live and start their businesses because of one-hour living circle has been formed. Strengthening people-to-people ties is the most important thing that Macao residents live and work with Guangdong and other inland residents. I believe that the people-to-people bonds is the greatest resource of 'one country, two systems' principle," said the official.

As one of the most complex projects in China, the major bridge project includes the construction of the 23 km-long bridge, 7 km-long tunnel, and two artificial islands.

Fifty-five kilometers in total length, it's the world's longest sea-based bridge. It has the world's deepest underwater tunnel - 46 meters deep. It used 420,000 tons of steel - equivalent to 60 Eiffel Towers.

Its construction started in December 2009, and the two parts of the main bridge were linked in June 2016.

In May 2017, the final segment of the underwater tunnel was installed. And on New Year's Eve, the lights were switched on, hailing the bridge's completion as 2018 began.
