Storyline

Macao expects new economic opportunities to be brought by the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HKZM Bridge), which opened on Tuesday in the presence of Chinese President Xi Jinping at a ceremony in the city of Zhuhai, south China's Guangdong Province.

Officials of the government of the Macao Special Administrative Region said that the cross-sea bridge is a major infrastructure project that connects the region with both Hong Kong and the inland, creating an hour's living circle. It will bring more tourists to Macao and create more opportunities for cooperation with the outside world.

Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, director of the Macao Government Tourist Office, said that the bridge will boost Macao's tourism industry.

"The whole of Macao, especially the tourism industry, is eagerly looking forward to the opening of the bridge, as it will make travel more convenient. Then we will organize tourism agencies in Macao to visit the Greater Bay Area and other cities to seek opportunities for cooperation with inland tourism agencies," she said.

Dr. Samuel, K.C. Tong, member of the Economic Development Commission, expressed the hope to break the bottleneck in Macao's economic development.

"I think it's a great project. The bottleneck for Macao's development in tourism, services and trade is the lack of cross-border tourist sources. If the bridge may help break the bottleneck, it would be very good for the development of Macao's tourism and diversification of tourist sources," said Dr. Samuel, K.C. Tong, member of the Economic Development Commission.

More and more Macao young people have in recent years gone to the inland to work and live. The bridge will help promote the personnel exchanges and create more development opportunities for young people in Macao.

"The bridge will accelerate travel and make it easier for city clusters to contract each other. I think will stimulate the development of the economy of Macao as a whole," said Ho Sio Kam, president of the Chinese Educators Association of Macao.

"After all, Macao's economy and industries are unitary in nature. I believe the bridge will create boundless potential for young people in Macao to develop their careers in cities within the Greater Bay Area in Guangdong Province," said Li Chao Zu, president of the General Association of Chinese Students in Macao.

The 55-kilometer-long sea-crossing bridge, the world's longest, will cut travel time between the three places in southern China to about half an hour, making weather-dependent ferry ride commuting much easier.
