Storyline

Ports in south China have been ready for traffic flow on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao (HKZM) Bridge, a mega transportation project connecting the three regions.

Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the official opening of the world’s longest sea crossing bridge at a ceremony held in Zhuhai City on Tuesday morning.

The HKZM bridge is a 55-kilometer-long bridge-island-tunnel complex across the Pearl River Delta in southern China.

The project consists of a series of three cable-stayed bridges and one undersea tunnel, as well as two artificial islands. It spans the Lingdingyang channel, which connects Hong Kong with Macao and Zhuhai, three major cities on the Pearl River Delta. It is among the longest fixed-links in the world and is a major landmark in the area.

Customs clearance facilities to Zhuhai City and the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) are built on one artificial island while those to the Hong Kong SAR are on the other artificial island, which are next to Hong Kong International Airport.

The HKZM ridge will be officially open to traffic on Wednesday. Its entry into operation makes the three regions within an hour’s drive to one another.
