Storyline

A mass shooting in the city of Thousand Oaks in Southern California on Wednesday has left 13 people dead, including a police officer and the gunman, with more than 20 others injured, local authorities have confirmed.

The gunman was identified as a 28-year-old former Marine named Ian David Long, said Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean. Authorities believe the gunman shot himself after carrying out the killing spree at a bar in the city.

Dean said his department had made contact with Long several times over the years, including a call to his home in April when it was believed he may have been suffering from poor mental health.

According to witnesses at the scene, before opening fire with a handgun, the shooter threw a smoke grenade into the bar, which was hosting a college night. One witness said some of the young people in the bar had also been present during the mass shooting at a Las Vegas music festival last October which left 58 dead.

Capt. Garo Kuredjian, spokesperson for the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, said one responding officer was killed at the scene.

"Last night at about 11:20, we received a call of shots fired at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks. Our deputies responded in about three minutes to the location. When they arrived, they heard gunshots and then they went inside. When one of our sergeants went inside, he was met with gunfire and he was shot. There are a little over 20 others that self-transported to the local hospitals for treatment. Those self-transported suffered non-life-threatening injuries," said Kuredjian.

The officer who lost his life was later named as Deputy Sgt. Ron Helus, a 29-year veteran of the Ventura County police force, who was set to retire from duty next year. When receiving initial reports of the shooting, Helus had been making a phone call to his wife.

The United States has one of the highest gun-related death tolls in the world due to lax gun control laws, according to a study released in August by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.

A series of shootings have occurred in recent weeks. On Friday, a man killed himself after shooting at least five people at a yoga studio in Tallahassee, Florida. On Oct. 29, a student died after being shot at a high school in North Carolina.

On Oct. 27, a gunman opened fire inside a synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, killing at least 11 people and injuring six others. The gunman was charged with dozens of counts, including religious hate crimes.
