Storyline

China hopes to achieve multiple goals in terms of regional economic cooperation during the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders' meeting from Nov 17 to 18 in Port Moresby, capital of Papua New Guinea, said a Chinese Foreign Ministry official on Tuesday.

Zhang Jun, Chinese assistant foreign minister, gave full affirmation to the important role the Asia-Pacific region has been playing in the world amid the new challenges and looming difficulties such as the rising of unilateralism and trade protectionism.

The Asia-Pacific is the most dynamic economic region with the largest scale in the world. Sticking to the right direction of cooperation and maintaining a steady momentum of growth in the the Asia-Pacific region is critical for the sustainable development in the world economy, said Zhang.

"Currently, the Asia-Pacific has maintained an overall stable situation but also faces new circumstances and challenges. Under the assault of unilateralism and protectionism, the Asia-Pacific is faced with many uncertainties. In this context, all parties have high expectations for this meeting," said Zhang.

The official continued to say that China hopes to gain a series of achievements in the meeting.

First of all, Zhang said, an effort should be made to build an open economy and maintain the right direction of development in the Asia-Pacific region.

"China is ready to work with other parties to uphold the rule-based multilateral trade system and steadily advance the building of an FTA, oppose protectionism, unilateralism, and further promote trade and investment liberalization and facilitation," said Zhang.

Second, Zhang reiterated the importance of the digital economy, an economy based on digital computer technologies, as it represents the future of global and regional economic development.

"The APEC Beijing meeting focused on innovation-driven development and producing important outcomes. China supports the APEC to formulate plans on digital economic cooperation, establish work mechanism arrangements, and maintain the momentum of innovation-driven growth," said Zhang.

Third, Zhang also calls for the region to deepen partnership and strive toward building a community with a shared future of the Asia-Pacific. The region, Zhang continued, needs to enhance the awareness of a "big family" community, consolidate and deepen our partnerships. Fourth, the post-2020 vision, which centers on linkage and integration, trade investment and services liberalization, is associated with the requirements of sustainable development.

The roadmap will be an important foundation for APEC to build and shape the future of cooperation after 2020, focusing on broader goals of trade and investment liberalization, and better address new opportunities and challenges such as sustainable growth, innovation and e-commerce.

Zhang said that in an effort to formulate a post-2020 cooperation vision to guide the long-term development of the APEC, China looks forward to the important guidance that this leaders' meeting is expected to provide.
