Storyline

China and Germany on Tuesday agreed to deepen their all-round strategic cooperation, jointly uphold multilateralism, and safeguard global free trade system.

The agreement was reached at the fourth round of China-Germany Strategic Dialogue on Diplomatic and Security Affairs by Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas in Beijing.

The Chinese foreign minister said the two countries have continued to deepen their cooperation in recent years and had close coordination in multilateral affairs.

Wang said China is willing to expand cooperation with Germany on artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and digitization and safeguard rule-based multilateral trading system and jointly advance global governance.

For his part, Maas said Germany has been committed to promoting Europe-Asia connectivity and adopted an active, open attitude to the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative.

The German foreign minister hopes that his country can grasp the opportunities brought by China's new round of opening-up and speed up the EU-China investment agreement negotiations.

Leading a business delegation, Maas left Berlin for Beijing on his first official visit to China from Monday to Tuesday. This is Maas' first official visit to China since he assumed office in March.
