Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday met with President of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) Peter Christian in Papua New Guinea’s capital Port Moresby.

During the meeting, Xi said China appreciates the Pacific island nation's adherence to the one-China policy and is willing to uphold the principle of sincerity, real results, amity and good faith and the principle of pursuing the greater good and shared interests to enhance unity and cooperation.

Xi said he hopes both sides will well implement cooperation agreements reached by the two countries recently on jointly building the Belt and Road, promote cooperation in such fields as trade, investment, agriculture, fishery and infrastructure construction.

Xi said he wishes the tourism event held by China and Pacific island nations in 2019 a success.

Xi added that China is ready to support and help the Federated States of Micronesia in tackling climate change within the framework of South-South cooperation.

Christian, for his part, said his country highly values relations with China and spoke highly of China's stance that every country, large or small, is equal.

He said the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is quite important for the regional development and his country is willing to expand cooperation with China in trade and tourism, as well as to further communication and coordination on tackling climate change.

Le président chinois Xi Jinping, en visite d'État en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée (PNG), a rencontré à Port Moresby le président des États fédérés de Micronésie Peter Christian.

La Chine apprécie l’adhésion de la Micronésie au principe d’une seule Chine, et elle est prête à renforcer sa coopération avec le pays, a déclaré M. Xi.

M. Xi espère que la Chine et la Micronésie mettront en œuvre les accords signés dans le cadre de l’initiative "la Ceinture et la Route", et promouvront la coopération dans le commerce, l’agriculture, la pêche et l’infrastructure. Il espère également que l’Année du tourisme entre la Chine et les pays insulaires du Pacifique en 2019 sera couronnée de succès.

M. Christian a déclaré que son pays attachait une grande importance aux relations avec la Chine et était prêt à élargir sa coopération avec la Chine dans les domaines du commerce et du tourisme, tout en renforçant la communication et la coordination avec la Chine sur des questions telles que le changement climatique.

Le président Xi est arrivé jeudi à Port Moresby pour effectuer une visite d'État en PNG et participer à la 26e Réunion des leaders économiques de la Coopération économique Asie-Pacifique (APEC). La PNG est la première étape de la tournée du président Xi dans la région Asie-Pacifique, qui le conduira également à Brunei et aux Philippines.
