Storyline

Chinese-language education has been going on for nearly 100 years at a school in Brunei, a country which has 10 percent of the population, around 40,000, with Chinese origin.

The Chung Hwa Middle School, or Sekolah Menengah Chung Hwa in Malay, was established in 1922 by local Chinese to inherit Chinese language and culture.
Now the school covers various levels of education from kindergarten to high school and has more than 2,300 students.

The school has been hiring professional teachers from China, among them is Zhang Qingfu, a teacher from south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. He has taught Chinese at the school for 11 years.

"The key point for me to work here is to do my duty to spread Chinese language and knowledge to more students with Chinese or non-Chinese origin," said Zhang.

The school also teaches the students different forms of traditional Chinese culture and arts including musical instruments, calligraphy, painting and martial arts.

Hong Wanyu, a student at grade nine, said she has played Guzheng, a traditional Chinese instrument of 21 or 25 strings, for eight to nine years.

"I have learnt playing Guzheng for eight to nine years, and I have played Red Sun on the Mount Jinggang, Yi Dance, Lofty Mountains And Flowing Water, and so on. Through these melodies I can learn more about the Chinese culture and more knowledge," she said.

The school also regularly organizes winter and summer camps, root-searching tours and other exchange activities to China.

Fu Yifeng, a student at grade six, expressed her wish to study in China in the future.

"Chinese language is our mother language, so my mother told me since I was small that I should learn the Chinese language well. I became enthusiastic about the Chinese language when I was small. I hope that I can get the opportunity to study in China in the future," she said.
