The Chung Hwa Middle School in Brunei has trained group after group of outstanding personnel, well-versed in the Chinese language and the culture of the Chinese nation and they have made great contributions to the exchange and cooperation between Chin and Brunei.

An example is Wu Chun, a well-reputed singer and actor familiar to Chinese audience.

His teacher, Dayang Kho Guik Lan, is now the principal of the school. What Wu learned when a child has had a big influence on his performance, creations and behavior.

"I have a lot of work done in China. If I don't have the grounding [in Chinese], it'll have been quite different. We learned culture of the Chinese nation at school," said Wu.

"Our school provides the student with a channel for acquiring the ability of conducting themselves. We teach students how to honor the teachers and respect what they teach. We tell them how to care about their society. The most important thing is that we tell them how to keep in memory the source when drinking water. Lastly, we tell them how to return and dedicate to society what they have learned and gained," said Dayang Kho Guik Lan.

Wu has in recent years acted in many Chinese movies and television dramas. Wu said the Bruneian culture and Chinese culture have their own characteristics but they do have things in common.

"I think both Chinese and Bruneians put family first. Family is the most important. I have children and I also hope they would learn to speak Chinese," said Wu.

As the exchanges and cooperation have been deepened in various areas between China and Brunei, building a community of shared future put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Belt and Road initiative has a strong repercussion in Brunei.
