He's a very frank person, the way he [presents] himself, you talk to him. He's very frank and very stable. He's very understanding, and we have a good rapport. The fact that the president is visiting my country during my term is enough pride for us to say that we are friends with China."

Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the Philippines this week is expected to push the relations between the two neighboring Asian countries to a new high, said Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.
The current relations between Beijing and Manila have reached an apex and are like a flower in full bloom, Duterte told the China Global Television Network in an interview on Nov 7. He said he took great pride in Xi's upcoming visit
"The coming visit of President Xi would spell like something, the full blossom of the flower. This can be, it's highest that the two nations can ever hope to have. He's a very frank person, the way he [presents] himself, you talk to him. He's very frank and very stable. He's very understanding, and we have a good rapport. The fact that the president is visiting my country during my term is enough pride for us to say that we are friends with China," said the president.
Figures from the Chinese government show that the trade volume between China and the Philippines in 2017 topped 50 billion U.S. dollars, which made China the Philippines' No. 1 trading partner and import origin. Philippine exports to China grew by 10.5 percent to 19.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2017.
Duterte believes Xi's upcoming visit will bring more tangible benefits to the people of both sides.
"The trade itself is encouraging us to sell more what we can," said Duterte, adding that Chinese tourists to the Philippines have also contributed a lot to the country's economy.
"I think at least about a million Chinese visiting the Philippines. That alone would improve the country. Our national interest now is China, because of the Filipinos. And for the Chinese also, who have a stake in the national interest of my country because of the so many Chinese and the fact that you have so many investments here," said Duterte.
At the invitation of Duterte, Xi is set to pay a state visit to the Philippines on November 20 and 21.
