Storyline

South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is making full use of its geographic advantages and favorable policies for overseas maritime cooperation to create more opportunities home and abroad, and Brunei is one of the beneficiaries.

As the largest harbor in Guangxi, the Qinzhou Port is also the closest to Southeast Asian countries.

"Business is growing year by year. This year, our Beibu Gulf Port is planning to handle a total of three million TEUs; the Qinzhou Port is planning to handle 2.3 million TEUs," said Ye Qinming, deputy manager of Operation Department, Beibu Gulf Port Qinzhou Wharves Co.

Among them, a large portion will be shipped to Brunei.

China and Brunei have exchanged goods since as early as the Western Han Dynasty more than 2,000 years ago. Now these freighters are continuing their voyage across the seas. And for the two ancient trading partners, modern maritime technology is promoting cooperation like never before.

In 2014, Guangxi signed a memorandum with Brunei to build an economic corridor for more cooperation. The co-development of the Muara Port is one of the major steps.

"We officially took over the Muara Port from Brunei on Feb 21, 2017. After the takeover, we've improved the port's handling efficiency. Moreover, the port has seen a steady growth in cargo handling capacity," said Zhou Yan, general manager of Beibu Gulf Port Qinzhou Wharves Co.

Helping Brunei modernize its only deep-water port, which was built in the 1970s, is only the first step. The next is to diversify the nation's industries and reduce its dependence on oil revenues.

"We are going to introduce China's advanced management concepts and industries to Brunei," said Zhou.

Zhou said that he has confidence in the two countries' future ties as he thinks that Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Brunei can be a great opportunity for the country to enhance trade with China.

Ahead of President Xi's visit to Brunei, several local newspapers published a signed article by the Chinese president. In the article, Xi said China and Brunei, with mutual trust and common development, will turn a new chapter in bilateral ties.
