Storyline


Brunei's Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah held a grand ceremony on Monday to welcome visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping at Istana Nurul Iman, Brunei's royal palace.

Xi was invited by Brunei's Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah to the welcome ceremony at the palace. Cheering on the sidewalk of the road in the vicinity of the palace, over 4,000 flag-waving local students warmly greeted the Chinese president.

President Xi and Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah walked onto the reviewing stand and the national anthems of the two countries were played. A 21-gun salute was fired for the Chinese president.

Accompanied by Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, President Xi reviewed Brunei's guard of honor. After the ceremony, the two heads of state went into the palace to meet members of Brunei's royal family.

Xi first congratulated Brunei on its economic and social achievements. He said China appreciates the long-term friendly policy upheld by the royal family toward China. Xi also welcomed them to visit China more often.

The Chinese president noted he believes with joint efforts by both sides, the China-Brunei traditional friendship will continue to flourish and their mutually beneficial cooperation will achieve more fruitful results.

Xi arrived in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei, on Sunday for a state visit, the first by a Chinese head of state in 13 years to the Southeast Asian country.

Brunei is the second stop of Xi's ongoing Asia-Pacific tour after a state visit to Papua New Guinea, where he also attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Economic Leaders' Meeting in its capital city of Port Moresby.

Xi's next stop is the Philippines.
