Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay his state visit to the Philippines from Tuesday.

In the capital city of Manila, the main streets have been decorated with Chinese national flags as the Philippine people look forward to Xi's visit.

The Republic of the Philippines, situated in the western Pacific Ocean, is a multi-ethnic archipelago country in southeast Asia with an area of 299,700 square kilometers and a population of 104.9 million.

The Philippines is a friendly neighbor and important partner of China.

China and the Philippines established diplomatic relations in 1975 and the two countries' foreign ministries built negotiation mechanisms in 1988. The Six-Year Development Program (SYDP) for Trade and Economic Cooperation between China and the Philippines was also signed last year to further strengthen the two countries' bilateral ties.

Nearly 900,000 Chinese tourists visited the Philippines in the first eight months of this year, ranking second among all countries.

China is currently the Philippines' largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching 51.28 billion U.S. dollars in 2017. The two countries also have extensive cooperation in transportation infrastructure, industrial parks, energy and people's livelihoods.
