Senior Philippine officials have expressed their high expectations for the forthcoming visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying the visit would further cement relations and strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

President Xi will start his two-day visit to the Philippines on Tuesday and be welcomed by his Philippine counterpart President Rodrigo Duterte in the country's capital of Manila, where the two leaders are also scheduled to hold bilateral talks.

"There is a lot of areas to explore and we are open to every opportunity that would come our way and we are also opening our doors to Chinese companies who would like to help us develop Philippine agriculture, especially fisheries," said Manny Pinol, the Philippine Agriculture Secretary.

Antonio Joselito Lambino II, the assistant secretary with Strategy, Economics, and Results Group (SERG) of the Philippine Department of Finance, said that President Xi's visit means a great opportunity to strengthen the ties that bind the two countries together and the significance will be much appreciated.

"The leaders symbolic commitment to this exchange can then be followed by other sectors, academia, business, civil society and the like. So it is of great symbolic importance. It is also important in terms of the agreements that will be signed while President Xi is here," he said.

A signed article by President Xi titled "Open Up a New Future Together for China-Philippine Relations" has been widely published in many of the Philippines' most influential newspapers ahead of his state visit and has won widespread praise in the Southeast Asian country.
