Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the Philippines is historic, said Philippine Agriculture Secretary Manny Pinol in Manila on Saturday.

Pinol told China Central Television days before Xi’s visit scheduled to start on Tuesday that the Philippines is looking forward to it, the first state visit by a Chinese head of state since 2005.

"The visit of President Xi Jinping to the Philippines is historic. This is something that we are look forward to. This is something that we are excited about, not only because almost all Filipinos carry some degree of Chinese blood in their veins, but also because we feel that a stronger relationship with China will open up trade and commerce opportunities for the Philippines, and a successful business relationship with China could spell the difference between poverty and prosperity," he said.

Pinol spoke about the broad cooperation in agriculture and fisheries between China and the Philippines in recent years and vowed there would be more in the future.

"There is a lot of areas to explore and we are open to every opportunity that would come our way and we are also opening our doors to Chinese companies," said Pinol.
