Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping's bylined article "Open up a New Future Together for China-Philippine Relations" carried by three Philippine newspapers ahead of his state visit to the country is highly acclaimed by Filipino experts of various circles, who are looking forward to the first visit by a Chinese head of state in 13 years, which is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

The article indicates that China values the friendship with the Philippines, they say.

President Xi mentions in the article that the Philippines' is a natural partner for co-building the Belt and Road Initiative. Philippine experts believe that the initiative matches with the Philippines' "Build, Build, Build" agenda, an infrastructure program put forward by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, which will bring the two countries to closer collaboration.

"We're lucky that China is a major contributor to financing our massive infrastructure program. The Philippines supports this move towards globalization rather than protectionism," said Benjamin E. Diokno, Secretary of the Philippines' Department of Budget and Management.

"It very importantly discusses also the ancient people-to-people relationships, the ancient trade ties and even the family ties. The immigrants coming from China to the Philippines, and from the Philippines to China of one generation, born in Quezon Province. I was so surprised. It was like a history lesson," said Wilson Lee Flores, a local writer and scholar with Chinese origin.

The Chinese Commercial News is a Chinese-language daily newspaper in the Philippines with a history of more than one century. Its vice chairman Tan Tiansiong said that President Xi's bylined article has introduced the main goal of his visit, which will push the bilateral ties between the two countries even closer.

"President Xi's article tells the government and people of the Philippines about what he will do in this state visit. President Duterte is also looking forward to it. He says 'I'm proud to have China as my friend.' The two heads of state will exchange views and work out a new direction for the Filipino-China ties in the future. I believe that President Xi's visit is bound to be very fruitful," he said.
