"The truth is that since 2000, Russia has been calling on the United States to stop using the simulating ballistic missiles of intermediate and shorter-range target missiles when testing the anti-ballistic missile system, because it is prohibited by the treaty. In addition, the MK-41 vertical launch system deployed in Romania and Poland can be used to launch intermediate-range cruise missiles, which is a direct violation of the treaty."

Storyline

Russia will target countries where U.S. intermediate and short-range missile systems are deployed if the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty is nullified, according to Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov Wednesday.

Speaking at a Ministry of Defense news briefing in Moscow, Gerasimov said the military buildup of the United States and its allies has forced Russia to increase its combat potential to guarantee its security, while mentioning Russia has limited its military budget to around 50 billion U.S. dollars a year over the last few years, much lower than the U.S. military budget.

Gerasimov stressed that claims from the U.S. that Russia has violated the treaty are all trying to cover up the real situation.

"The truth is that since 2000, Russia has been calling on the United States to stop using the simulating ballistic missiles of intermediate and shorter-range target missiles when testing the anti-ballistic missile system, because it is prohibited by the treaty. In addition, the MK-41 vertical launch system deployed in Romania and Poland can be used to launch intermediate-range cruise missiles, which is a direct violation of the treaty," said Gerasimov.

Gracimov said that if the U.S. insists on abolishing the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, then in response, those countries where the U.S. missiles are deployed will become potential targets to Russia.

"If the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty is eventually torn, Russia will have to take countermeasures. You know, as military experts, the strike target of Russia's response will not be the property of United States, but countries that host the U.S. intermediate and short-range missile systems," said Gerasimov.
