Storyline

After nearly two years of adaptation and petrol training, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) air force has improved its combat capacity with the Su-35 fighter jets from Russia.

In a round-the-clock exercise of the PLA Southern Theater Command, several Su-35 aircraft practiced various tasks including short takeoffs and landings, two-jet combat, four-jet combat and aerial refueling.

"The Su-35 fighter jet has great maneuverability because of its thrust-vectoring engine. The engine is installed at a bevel angle of 33 degrees, so the jet can effectively veer no matter whether it's moving horizontally or vertically," said Wang Xiaodong, a deputy brigade commander with the PLA air force.

As night fell, the fighter jets closed in on the designated area and used onboard equipment to search for land-and-sea borne targets.

"In the future, the air battles may well start during the evening, so we should always have the capability to fight in the dark," said Cao Dengke, a pilot.

In-flight refueling was one of the most challengings part of the drill. In a long-distance assault, several fighter and tanker pilots collaborated to refill the oil tank. After that, the fighter jets shared data to coordinate a strike at the ground target, so as to test the joint operation move among the fighter jets.

China confirmed a 2-billion-dollar deal to buy Su-35 fighter jets from Russia in Nov. 2015, and the first batch of four jets were delivered in Dec. 2016. The PLA air force has sent the fighter jets for island patrol training over the country's islands including Taiwan.
