The Chinese Supreme People’s Court’s approval of a set of provisions for setting up an intellectual property tribunal under it is a milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen protection of intellectual property rights, according to a commentary published Saturday by China Radio International (CRI) under the China Media Group (CMG).
The President of the Supreme People's Court and Chief Justice Zhou Qiang on Dec. 3 presided over a meeting to review the Provisions of the Supreme People's Court for Issues Concerning the Intellectual Property Tribunal, approving in principle the set of provisions for operating a special tribunal which will be responsible for unified trial of highly professional appellate cases of disputes over intellectual property rights including patents filed in China.
The CMG commentary holds that the approval is in response to the demand of different parties, shows China’s declaration to the international community of its determination and resolve to improve IP protection. It is also part of the Chinese government’s efforts to boost and protect innovation.
Chinese courts have seen an increase of IP-related cases in recent years. In 2017, they tried nearly 240,000 such cases in total, up 33.5 percent year on year.
